Ontmoet elkaar bij Connaught Place voor het begin van uw 3 uur durende avondtour door Old Delhi, ook wel bekend als Shahjahanabad, gebouwd in 1639 als hoofdstad van het Mogolrijk. Begin het leven in de 'ommuurde stad' te ervaren tijdens een ritje in een riksja langs straten die wemelen van de bruisende markten en historische bezienswaardigheden.

Ontdek verschillende markten, waaronder Khari Baoli, Azië's grootste groothandel kruidenmarkt en een van New Delhi's drukste plekjes. Volg uw neus langs verschillende kraampjes en hoor hoe de pepers en kruiden die meestal worden gebruikt in Indiase gerechten oorspronkelijk naar het land werden gebracht door invasielegers. Naast bakken vol kleurrijke kruiden vindt u hier verschillende soorten gedroogde vruchten te koop.

De historische ontdekkingen blijven komen terwijl u enkele imposante wonderen van de architectuur passeert, gebouwd op het hoogtepunt van het Mogolrijk in het midden van de 17e eeuw. Bewonder de indrukwekkende, 2 kilometer lange zandstenen muren van het Rode Fort die zich uitstrekken door Oud Delhi.

Na een korte wandeling door de Kinari Bazaar stopt u voor een kopje thee of een koel drankje voordat u verder gaat naar gurdwara Sis Ganj. De gurdwara, een heiligdom beschreven als een 'poort naar de goeroe,' herdenkt de negende Sikh-goeroe, die aan het eind van de 17e eeuw werd onthoofd vanwege zijn geloofsovertuigingen. Het is nog altijd een gebedshuis voor lokale Sikhs, en uw gids legt het sikhisme uit tijdens de rit terug langs de moskee van Jama Masjid. Tot slot komt u aan bij een gemeenschappelijke keuken waar de plaatselijke bewoners gratis komen eten.

Venturing into Old Delhi on your own can be quite intimidating, so going on this tour with a guide to help navigate the streets and to provide invaluable local context was great!

We traveled a total of 33 hours from Colorado to Dehli to spend Christmas with my husband in India as he was working over the vacation. My kids were exhausted and at first not excited to take a tour. We met Shehnaz and INSTANTLY that changed. She was absolutely fantastic and her knowledge of the city and the entire tour was incredible. I honestly wish we could bottle her up and take her with us for the rest of our vacation. The tour itself was amazing, and the kids 8 and 11 were mesmerized. I signed up for the trip late at night the day before and turned out to be the only person on the trip! Jitu was an excellent guide who spoke good English, did the proper introductions, and provided good information on the places that we visited. He also had ready answers to my various questions about Delhi and India. The trip started at Rajiv Chowd metro station and we took a subway to old Delhi, which turned out to be the only metro ride I had taken during my stay in Delhi. At old Delhi, we took a rickshaw which again turned out to be the only chance that I had during my stay to ride in such a mode of transportation. The ride was bumpy, which was to be expected, but also provided a good window to savoring the sights and sounds of the old city. The rest of the visit was conducted by foot, and as Jitu rightly pointed out, one has to possess strong legs and nimble reflexes in order to cross the streets in the old city, due to the hoards of humanity and the massive chaotic traffic! Cling on tightly to your bags and personal belongings! The spice market was colorful and fascinating, and great for pictures if you are into photography. The Sikh temple was sombre yet interesting, and made me want to read up more about the history of Sikhism. The trip ended with a metro ride back to Rajiv Chowd metro station. Overall a highly recommended trip if you have a few hours to spare in Delhi!
